I am a big fan of animal prints, and they continue to be a hot fashion trend.  Animal prints spend so much time on the “hot item” list season after season, they actually deserve “timeless classic” status.  I own leopard print pumps that I’ve had for at least 5 years, and they are just as trendy today as the day I bought them.  The same goes for my 10 year old zebra clutch.

The key to wearing animal prints when you are petite is to wear one animal print piece at a time.  A cheetah print twinset with matching shoes and handbag results in “overkill.” (pardon the pun)   A cheetah print twinset worn with a pair of black wool gab pants and black accessories  makes a flattering choice for all petite women.  The animal pattern worn on the top half of the petite figure draws attention upward for added height.  However, the petite woman with fuller hips or thighs should avoid wearing animal print bottoms.  A giraffe handbag could be the perfect accessory for a brown dress or suit but when paired with a giraffe print skirt, you have one too many animals in the zoo.

I am all for a walk on the “wild side” to update your fall wardrobe, but urge petite women to coordinate outfits around one fabulous animal print piece in order to avoid fashion “faux paws.”

I kicked off my Petite Training Camp today with Dillard’s, a new concept for team building and style coaching.  So I am now waiting for a delayed flight at the New Orleans airport and playing “Petite Fashion Police,’ my own little version of “What Not to Wear.”  Here are my sightings:

 THE GOOD

Sometimes simple is best.  The most chic petite look spotted was a 50ish blonde in black capri pants, a black tank, a boldly striped black and white jacket that was slightly fitted at the waist, and black ballet flats.  Her hair was pulled back in a low ponytail and dazzling pearl drop earrings dangled just below her earlobes.  Here is a woman after my own heart because she is following 4 of my top 10 petite tips:

  1. Wear vertical lines or patterns.
  2. Wear unbroken lines of color on the body.
  3. Match your shoes with your hemline.
  4. Choose accessories that flatter rather than overpower.

THE BAD

The petite lady wearing the black twinset with animal print pants initially looked quite stylish.  Then I saw it – a HUGE jaguar pin on her left shoulder.  It was actually about the size of a teacup Chihuahua.  One very large accessorizing mistake threw her entire look off balance.  Maybe she is a devoted Jacksonville Jaguars fan, but she is also a shining example to petite women that you need to keep proportion in mind at all times.

 THE UGLY

The biggest “fashion victim” of the day was a young Asian girl probably around 4’10” wearing an oversized tie-dyed tee shirt with jeans tucked into thigh high black leather boots, and accessorized with a skinny Missoni-inspired scarf that literally hung down below her knees.  She honestly looked like she was playing dress up in someone else’s clothing.  Warning to all petite women:  Thigh high boots are a guaranteed way to make your legs look shorter.

All of the fall fashion magazines say that “Black is Back.”  Did it ever really leave?  I don’t think so.  Black is timeless.  Black is classic.  If in doubt, wear black.

I have been a big fan of black since my “New York Years” when this 20-something Southern girl moved to the big city and learned very quickly why New Yorkers wear all black.  Black doesn’t show dirt or grime.  Since then, I have infused lots of color into my wardrobe but am still a huge believer in black basics – a pant, a skirt, a suit, a little black dress.

Why do I love black?  Let me count the ways.  Black always looks right whether it’s a black tie occasion, a business meeting, or girl’s night out.  Black is always slimming.  It knocks pounds off every petite shape and size.  A black suit paired with an animal print or patterned top paints unbroken lines of color on the petite figure for the illusion of height.  For those of you who travel a lot, pack black.  It won’t show wrinkles and works with neutrals, brights, or pastels.  And nothing beats the little black dress for class and sophistication.

So petite women, invest your clothing dollars wisely this fall and let black work its magic.
