If you have flipped through fashion magazines or been out shopping lately, you will find that denim is the hottest thing going for Fall.  This is definitely a “sign of the times” because a denim jean is the most versatile item you can own.  Dress it up.  Dress it down.  I’m especially thrilled to finally find a great selection of denim being offered in petite sizes.  Last week, roughly half of the Petite Department at the local Nordstrom featured denim jeans and updated tops.  Listed below are a few tips to help you shop for jeans that will flatter your petite proportions.

Jag jeans

For the Pear Shaped Petite:

Boot cut or flared leg jeans in a darker shade of denim will balance fuller hips with narrow shoulders.  “Relaxed Fit” jeans offer a roomier cut in the hips and thighs.

For the Inverted Pear Shaped Petite:

Skinny or straight leg jeans often flatter petite women who are “busty” on top but slimmer in the hips and rear end.

 For the Hourglass Shaped Petite:

Jeans that fit the hips are usually huge in the waist.  Styles with a low rise or a curved waistband are more likely to fit both areas.

 For the Circular Shaped Petite:

To flatten and control a fuller middle section, look for jeans that feature a hidden Lycra tummy panel.

This weekend marks the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock – the famous festival of peace, music, and love.  Four decades later,  stores are filled with fashion trends inspired by Woodstock including tie-dye tops, peasant blouses, maxidresses, and crochet bags.  The peace sign is hotter than ever, reigning as the top fashion trend to span generations.  It appeals to young and old.  The peace sign will simply never go out of style.

The current “cool” look for the tweens in my neighborhood is a tee shirt and jewelry with peace sign emblems.  I flashback to when I was 13 and my favorite necklace was a black velvet choker decorated with a silver peace sign.  The 20-something college girl next door just got a peace sign tatooed on her foot.  All of the middle-aged ladies at my gym come to yoga class wearing 60’s inspired tanks and tees with messsages of peace and love.

Many fashion experts will tell you that if you wore a trend the first time it was popular, you should avoid it the second time around.  The conventional wisdom being that you’re too old to pull it off.  I say the peace sign is the exception.  Wear it.  Embrace its powerful message.  Peace.

I love my job.  I love the fact that no two days are ever the same.  I feel blessed to have a job that gives me so much creative freedom.  So I’m very excited to add Petite Fashion Blogger to a resume that currently includes Petite Fashion Specialist, Petite Training Coach, book author, and newsletter editor as well as stints earlier in my career as a Petite Buyer and manufacturer’s Sales Rep.  For free-lancers like me, surviving the current retail climate requires constant re-invention.  When one door closes, there’s not a lot of time to find an open one.  No work = no paycheck.

Blogging is where it’s at these days!  If you want to get respect and visibility, you’ve got to blog.  If you want to establish yourself as an expert in your field, you’ve got to blog.

That’s why I’m jumping on the blogging bandwagon and turning www.forpetitesake.com into a petite fashion blog.  My goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of petite women by sharing the expertise that comes with over 20 years of petite fashion industry experience and a lifetime of shopping as a petite customer.  I hope that you will follow my blog regularly and share your comments.

Whenever I am asked for my number one fashion tip for petite women, my answer is always the same.  Shop for clothing silhouettes with strong vertical lines.  Vertical lines and patterns are every petite woman’s friend because they draw the eye in an up and down motion, creating the illusion of height.  As an added bonus, vertical lines also have a slimming effect.  Once you start shopping with verticals in mind, you will find that vertical options are absolutely endless.
The more obvious choices include striped patterns especially pinstripes, vertical pleating, zip front closures, and wrap tops or dresses.  More subtle examples of flattering vertical lines include ribbed knits, cable patterns, princess seaming, athletic wear with racing stripes, and tops embellished with embroidery or beading that paints a vertical line on the petite figure.
