LET THERE BE LACE – Go dark and glamorous in black lace or ultra-feminine in ivory or pastel shades. The hottest hosiery trend going for the holidays is the black lace leg.

RED HOT - This attention-getting color will be spotted on petite fashionistas at every holiday party – red dresses, red tops, red shoes, red handbags, red nails, red lips.

PUTTING ON THE GLITZ – Shimmer in a beaded or sequined top or dress.

THE VELVET TOUCH – Turn heads in eternally elegant black velvet or rich shades or crimson, amethyst, or cobalt.

It is a tough challenge to dress for a home-based career. You need a wardrobe that is versatile and professional, yet super comfortable. I have worked from home for the past 20 years. Trust me that there have been many days when I have lost track of time, not showered by 5 p.m., and been very grateful that I don’t have Skype. If my clients could see me on those days, they might never hire me again. If you are wearing sweatpants all day, it is very easy to get distracted by dirty laundry, dirty dishes, and who’s on Oprah. That is why it is important to put together a home office wardrobe that means business. The trick is to dress like a winner so that you will feel and perform like a winner.

Here are a few tips for dressing for success when you are your own boss:

1. Make your work wardrobe about easy choices. I call it “mindless dressing.” A pair of black pants or leggings will work with virtually every top in your closet whether it’s a bright, pastel, or neutral color. Find a style that fits your petite proportions perfectly and invest in several pair. Black doesn’t show wrinkles and it doesn’t show dirt.

2. Keep it simple. You don’t want to waste a lot of valuable time getting dressing. Two pieces is all you need, a top and a bottom. Layer on a cardigan if you feel a chill. Add a jacket, a scarf, or some cool accessories if you have a meeting outside of the home.

3. Believe in the power of denim. Jeans rule as the pant for all seasons that looks right for all reasons. Build a basic denim wardrobe. The average petite consumer owns 7 pairs of jeans. You will always be motivated and productive when you are wearing your favorite jeans.

I religiously clean my closets out twice a year. It is a form of therapy for me, an opportunity to purge. I love the chance to reorganize my clothes and accessories. It gives me great joy to give clothes and shoes that I don’t wear to those less fortunate than me. My husband doesn’t understand my neurotic need to shift all of my “summery” clothes to my off-season closet every November and pull out my “wintery” clothes. He finds this whole semi-annual closet ritual borderline crazy since we live in Florida where all of the seasons sort of melt into one another. The closet swap provides me with a lot of valuable fashion lessons. Here is what I learned this year:

1. I HAVE A SHOE FETISH.

This is crystal clear when I find shoes that I haven’t worn for months because I forgot I had them. I make no apologies for my love of my shoes. Shoes make me happy. A new pair guarantees a good mood.

2. CLASSIC PIECES NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.

Every time I clean out my closets, I am reminded of the benefits of investing in classics. My black wool crepe pencil skirt which I adore is over ten years old. My chocolate brown twill trousers are at least that old. The good news is that they still fit.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-561" title="Black skirt" src="http://forpetitesake.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Black-skirt.jpg" alt="Black skirt" width="165" height="254" / class="wmp" id="wmp1">

My favorite black skirt

3. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY BLACK TOPS OR BLACK SHOES.

Okay, I admit that I own 10 black knit tops, 14 black sweaters, 22 pair of black shoes, and 3 pair of black boots. That may sound a bit excessive, but to me it is exactly the right number. Each top, each pair of shoes represents a different look, a different mood. Is a black beaded flip-flop even in the same family as a black suede platform pump? A black satin camisole gives a menswear patterned suit a sexy twist while a black rib turtleneck is always a classic. Every petite fashionista knows that all black pieces are not alike.

<img class="aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-562" title="Black pumps" src="http://forpetitesake.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Black-pumps-150x150.jpg" alt="Black pumps" width="150" height="150" / class="wmp" id="wmp1">Sexy black pumps

Let’s face it. July means that it is HOT everywhere. The Northeast is wilting under a heat wave. Here in suburban Orlando, you can’t even walk to your mailbox without sweating. So how can a petite woman keep cool in July and August and still look stylish?

The obvious answer is to wear the least amount of clothing possible. Bare arms, bare shoulders, bare legs, exposed toes. Wear sundresses, strapless or one-shoulder tops and dresses, halters, tanks, shorts, minis, flip-flops, and sandals wherever, whenever you can.

Another simple petite fashion solution is to stay cooler by wearing fabrics that breathe. Exactly what does that mean? How can a fabric breathe?

To explain, let’s take a look at the two types of fibers used to make petite clothing, natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Think of a fiber as a piece of thread that is woven together to create fabric. Natural fibers originate from plants or animals. Synthetic fibers are created from man-made chemicals. Natural fibers breathe due to a looser weave. Synthetic fibers don’t. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and rayon don’t absorb moisture. It gets trapped between the fibers causing your body temperature to rise. On the other hand, natural fibers like cotton, linen, and silk make the best choices for a summer wardrobe because they absorb moisture, offering you a natural source of air conditioning.

<img class="size-full wp-image-401 alignnone" title="Summer dress" src="http://forpetitesake.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Summer-dress.jpg" alt="Summer dress" width="202" height="270" / class="wmp" id="wmp1">

I have seen Sex and the City 2 twice already and still cannot believe how 5’3” Sarah Jessica Parker, a.k.a. Carrie Bradshaw, looks like she has the legs of a 5’10” supermodel. She is one of those petite women blessed with extremely long legs.

Short women with long legs? A tall petite? It sounds sort of like a fashion oxymoron, which is by definition a figure of speech in which 2 contradictory words are placed together for effect. Aren’t all short women supposed to have short legs? Au contraire.

Look at Sarah Jessica. Granted, she is known for her skyscraper heels, a guaranteed way to make toned legs look like they go on forever. Her sometimes eclectic, always fashion savvy alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw breaks petite fashion rules on a regular basis, but she follows some pretty basic guidelines to create the illusion of height on camera. Wear it really short or wear it really long.

Carrie wears her skirts or dresses short, well above the knee, or she wears long dresses that drape all the way to the floor. From the Halston Heritage white jersey dress she wears in Sex and the City 2’s first scene to the short electirc blue pleated dress also by Halston Heritage (featured below) or her Dior newsprint dress, Carrie shows that the shorter the dress, the longer the leg looks.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-377" title="Halston Heritage" src="http://forpetitesake.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Halston-Heritage3.jpg" alt="Halston Heritage" width="111" height="290" / class="wmp" id="wmp1">

The long black Emilio Pucci evening gown worn to Smith’s movie premiere proves that one color story from head-to-toe always makes a petite woman look taller, sexy and glamorous. One of Carrie’s most controversial outfits is the Zac Posen purple and gray crinoline skirt (rumored to be the bottom half of a ballgown) paired with a J’Adore Dior cotton tee shirt. Believe it or not, this unusual combination backs up the petite principle that a short top paired with a long skirt divides the petite figure at uneven points for a body lengthening effect.

Petite fashionistas take note. Even if you don’t particularly care for Carrie Bradshaw’s style, this “all leg or no leg” approach to petite fashion seems to really work. You don’t have to be in the middle of the desert to pull off the mirage of really long legs.

If you are really short, have heavy calves or thick ankles, capri pants may not be your best look. For those of you in the 5′2″ to 5′4″ height range with shapely legs, matching your shoes with your hemline will help you pull off the look with confidence and style.

If you have been in a department store lately, I am sure that you will agree with me that the Petite Department has become increasingly hard to find. Finding petite clothing in major discount chains like Ross or T. J. Maxx is now like finding a needle in a haystack. Like many of you, I have never been more frustrated with shopping. Petite women have always been the misunderstood customer, now they are also the forgotten customer.

So why is a consumer base estimated to spend $10 billion annually on clothing being ignored? Having spent over 20 years in the petite fashion industry, I have my theories. When I started my career as a Petite Buyer, the petite business was booming. Every manufacturer wanted to produce their line in petite sizes. Every trendy item, every hot look was offered in petite sizes. Department stores jumped on the petite bandwagon and profits surged.

But as the years passed, these same stores started to take the petite customer for granted and eventually got lazy. Management always loved the sales that the Petite Department produced, but never really saw the petite customer as having different needs from other customers. They failed to understand that not only a large selection of merchandise, but special attention kept this customer loyal to their store. When upper management got bored with the petite niche market, they moved on and sought new areas of business to develop. The centralized check-out counter dealt another blow to the petite customer accustomed to high levels of customer service.

As the economy started to stagger, department stores having already lost their zeal for the petite business, started to let manufacturers dictate what is cut in petite sizes. Inventory became more about basics, less about fashion and newness. The bottom line is that Petite Buyers, store management, and manufacturers quit fighting for us. Thus, the dramatically altered or non-existent state of the Petite Department.

So what is a petite girl to do? Unite as a group and vent your frustration loud and clear. Power comes in numbers. Join a grass roots movement like www.bellapetite.com and advocate for change in the petite industry. Please send me your thoughts and suggestions on how we can collectively stand tall and be heard.

Let me start by once again dispelling the myth that petite means tiny. Actually, only 8% of all petite women weigh 100 pounds or less. Reality is that petites come in all shapes and sizes. Approximately half of all petites are pear shaped, wearing one size on top and a size or two bigger on the bottom. If you want to instantly look a size smaller, flatten a tummy, or smooth out bulges and ripples, bodyshapers are a “must have” for your petite wardrobe.

I wear a size 6P top, 8P bottom and I swear by my Spanx seamless shapers (pictured below). Other major labels specializing in control shapewear includ Wacoals, Jockey, Playtex, Bali, Warners, Hanes, and Body Slimmers by Nancy Ganz. Bodyshapers have become a Hollywood red carpet essential and acceptable to women of all ages and sizes, even those with a perfectly toned body who just want to show it off. Control ranges from light to extra firm. Recent innovations include new lightweight fabrics that still provide great control and smoothing functions. Trust me, today’s styles are a far cry from the girdles worn by our mothers and grandmothers.

If you want to look and feel fantastic all over, it begins with what’s hiding underneath. Invest in a good bodyshaper. They truly are a girl’s best friend.

The weather is freezing across the country, even in Florida where I live. But I feel pretty confident saying that only in Florida do residents wear sweaters and flip-flops when it is 30 degrees outside.

This uniquely Florida fashion statement is something that I will never get used to. Why would any reasonably intelligent person expose their naked feet in sub-freezing temperatures? Yet everywhere I go, I see women wearing cashmere sweaters or sweatshirts on top only to look down and see flip-flops or exercise sandals on the feet. I urge my fellow petite Floridians to invest in boots and opaque tights this time of year. Not only will these cold weather essentials keep you warm, they create long unbroken lines of color that will stretch short legs.

Common sense dictates that no matter how many layers of clothing you wear on the top half of your body, you will still be cold if your toes are frozen.
