It is hard to beat the graphic combination of black and white.  Here is why every petite woman should have black and white combinations in her wardrobe:

1.  Black and white outfits are so easy to put together and always look stylish.

2.  You are sure to get noticed (in a good way) in this dynamic duo.

3.  Black and white is great for travel because everything mixes and matches.

4.  Accessorizing is mindless.  Black and white works with shoes and handbags in every color – bright, neutral, pastel, or neon.

There are a few tips petite women need to keep in mind to flawlessly pull off the look.  First of all, keep it simple.  Too many blocks of black and white on a petite figure is overwhelming.  If you opt for a black and white print, don’t wear a pattern bigger than the size of your fist.  Finally, remember that black conceals and white reveals.  Use this unbeatable combination of color to maximize your assets and minimize your flaws.  For example, a pear shaped petite can balance wide hips with narrow shoulders by pairing a solid black bottom with an eye-catching black /white  pattern on top.

I am a big fan of animal prints, and they continue to be a hot fashion trend.  Animal prints spend so much time on the “hot item” list season after season, they actually deserve “timeless classic” status.  I own leopard print pumps that I’ve had for at least 5 years, and they are just as trendy today as the day I bought them.  The same goes for my 10 year old zebra clutch.

The key to wearing animal prints when you are petite is to wear one animal print piece at a time.  A cheetah print twinset with matching shoes and handbag results in “overkill.” (pardon the pun)   A cheetah print twinset worn with a pair of black wool gab pants and black accessories  makes a flattering choice for all petite women.  The animal pattern worn on the top half of the petite figure draws attention upward for added height.  However, the petite woman with fuller hips or thighs should avoid wearing animal print bottoms.  A giraffe handbag could be the perfect accessory for a brown dress or suit but when paired with a giraffe print skirt, you have one too many animals in the zoo.

I am all for a walk on the “wild side” to update your fall wardrobe, but urge petite women to coordinate outfits around one fabulous animal print piece in order to avoid fashion “faux paws.”

This weekend marks the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock – the famous festival of peace, music, and love.  Four decades later,  stores are filled with fashion trends inspired by Woodstock including tie-dye tops, peasant blouses, maxidresses, and crochet bags.  The peace sign is hotter than ever, reigning as the top fashion trend to span generations.  It appeals to young and old.  The peace sign will simply never go out of style.

The current “cool” look for the tweens in my neighborhood is a tee shirt and jewelry with peace sign emblems.  I flashback to when I was 13 and my favorite necklace was a black velvet choker decorated with a silver peace sign.  The 20-something college girl next door just got a peace sign tatooed on her foot.  All of the middle-aged ladies at my gym come to yoga class wearing 60’s inspired tanks and tees with messsages of peace and love.

Many fashion experts will tell you that if you wore a trend the first time it was popular, you should avoid it the second time around.  The conventional wisdom being that you’re too old to pull it off.  I say the peace sign is the exception.  Wear it.  Embrace its powerful message.  Peace.
